Why Cave Creek Pools Drift So Fast
Sun, Heat, Dust and Hard Water
Desert pools do not slide gently out of balance. They go from fine to green inside a week in July, and four things drive it.
Sun. Ultraviolet light destroys free chlorine. Cyanuric acid, the stabilizer, shields it, so we hold it in the 30 to 50 ppm range. Too little and chlorine burns off by afternoon. Too much and the chlorine you have works more slowly.
Heat. Past 105 degrees everything speeds up. Algae grows faster and chlorine is consumed faster. Water temperature also shifts the balance itself.
Dust. A monsoon storm drops fine grit across the valley. It clouds the water, loads the filter, and gives algae something to cling to.
Hard water. Our fill water carries a lot of calcium. Every inch that evaporates leaves it behind. Calcium carbonate then drops out of solution as scale. First on the tile, later on the heater and the salt cell.
Left alone, those four turn into cloudy water, algae, stained surfaces and equipment that wears out early. That is the case for weekly service here, rather than every other week.
The Numbers We Hold
Testing without adjusting is paperwork. Here is what we hold on a Cave Creek pool, and what each one does.
What We Test on Every Visit
pH. Pool water sits slightly alkaline, between 7.2 and 7.8. We aim for 7.4 to 7.6, where chlorine works well and swimmers are comfortable. Higher than that and chlorine turns sluggish while scale forms more easily.
Free chlorine. The sanitizer doing the work. Sunlight, debris and swimmers all consume it, so it needs replacing rather than simply measuring. The CDC is blunt about why that matters: water without a sanitizer residual is not water to swim in.
Total alkalinity. The buffer that stops pH swinging. When alkalinity drifts, pH will not hold however much acid goes in.
Cyanuric acid. The stabilizer, 30 to 50 ppm, protecting chlorine from the sun.
Calcium hardness. Too high and you get scale. Too low and the water turns aggressive, pulling calcium out of the plaster itself. Both ends cost money.
One more worth knowing. Water that smells strongly of chlorine usually has too little free chlorine, not too much. That smell is combined chlorine, formed when chlorine reacts with ammonia and other waste. More sanitizer clears it. Less makes it worse.
Hard Water, Scale and Your Equipment
Calcium is the quiet problem up here. Past roughly 500 ppm of calcium hardness, holding the balance takes real care. Near 1,000 ppm it stops being possible, and the pool needs fresh water rather than more chemicals.
You see it first as a white crust at the waterline, which is pool tile cleaning work. You feel it later in the heater and, on a salt pool, in a salt cell that has stopped producing.
Keeping the balance right every week is what slows all of that down.
When the Weekly Report Flags Something
Your report says what we cleaned and what we adjusted. It also says what looked wrong at the equipment pad.
A pump getting louder. Filter pressure climbing and not coming back down. Weak flow at the returns. Caught at that stage these are pool repairs. Left alone they turn into equipment replacements.
Filter Care Through Dust Season
We watch filter pressure on every visit. Backwash or clean happens when the gauge calls for it, not on a fixed date.
After a big monsoon blow, pressure can climb in days rather than weeks. A packed filter means weak flow, cloudy water and a pump working harder than it should. Heavy loading calls for a full pool filter cleaning rather than another backwash.
