A Real Cleaning, Not a Quick Rinse

What Your Filter Deals With Out Here

Bahama Blue Pool & Spa handles pool filter cleaning in Cave Creek, AZ. We pull the filter apart and wash the media properly. Then we inspect what is inside and put it back together, so the water moves again.

Your filter does the quiet work on a pool. It catches dust, sunscreen, pollen and whatever the last storm delivered, and it keeps catching until it packs full. Then flow drops, the pump works harder, and the water goes cloudy however much chlorine you add.

Desert air is the reason it happens faster here. A monsoon storm drops fine grit across the whole valley. Most of it ends up in your filter within a week.

Spring adds palo verde blossoms and mesquite catkins. Summer adds sunscreen, body oils and whatever blows in off the desert. A pool running long hours in the heat pushes all of it through the media, over and over.

Filter cleaning sits alongside weekly pool service and pool tile cleaning in our pool cleaning services.

When Your Filter Needs Cleaning

Read the Gauge, Not the Calendar

Note the pressure when the filter is clean. Once it climbs 8 to 10 psi above that reading, the filter is loaded and flow is dropping. That is the trigger for every filter type.

The other signs owners notice:

  • Water stays cloudy or hazy after a normal week
  • Weak flow from the return jets
  • The pump sounds like it is straining
  • Longer run times making no difference
  • Debris coming back into the pool
  • Algae getting a foothold even with chlorine present

If you have no idea what your clean pressure is, fix that first. Write it on the filter housing after the next cleaning.

Filter Types We Clean

Cartridge Filters

Cartridges are the most common filter on newer Cave Creek pools. They filter fine and they need no backwashing.

We pull the elements and wash between every pleat. Then the fabric gets checked for tears and collapsed ends. Cartridges are wear items rather than permanent parts, so they eventually get replaced instead of cleaned. We also check and lubricate the tank O-ring. A dried out O-ring is the usual cause of a leaking filter lid.

DE Filters

DE filters give the clearest water of the three, and they ask the most in return.

We strip the grids and wash the cloth. Grids get checked for tears and broken spines, then recharged with fresh DE through the skimmer. The usual dose is about 2 ounces of DE per square foot of filter area. A 36 square foot filter takes roughly 4.5 pounds. Short the recharge and the grids clog and tear.

Sand Filters

Sand filters ask the least of you between services, and they filter the coarsest.

We check the sand, the laterals and the multiport valve. Sand does not last forever. Years of backwashing wear the grains smooth, and smooth sand stops trapping dirt. That is a sand change rather than a cleaning.

What Our Pool Filter Cleaning Service Includes

1. Full Disassembly

The tank comes apart. Cartridges out, grids out, or the sand and valve inspected. Nothing gets judged from the outside.

2. Deep Cleaning of the Media

Every pleat and every grid gets washed. Where oils or calcium have built up, the elements need soaking rather than spraying. We tell you when a cartridge is past saving.

3. Inspection While It Is Open

Tears, collapsed pleats, cracked manifolds, broken laterals, worn O-rings, tank condition and the pressure gauge itself. An open filter is the only time you can see any of it.

4. Reassembly and DE Recharge

Back together with a lubricated O-ring, closed properly, and recharged with fresh DE if it is a DE filter.

5. Startup and Pressure Check

We start the system, purge the air, and note the new clean pressure. That reading is your baseline for the next few months, and it goes in your service notes.

How Often Pool Filters Need Cleaning in Cave Creek

Most pools here need a professional filter cleaning every three to six months. Dust season pushes that to the short end.

What moves it either way:

  • Filter type, and whether it is sized properly for the pool
  • Trees and planting around the deck
  • How many people swim, and how often
  • How long the pump runs each day
  • Storms, and how many of them
  • Whether the pool has a cover

Pressure is still the real answer. A pool that hits 8 to 10 psi above clean in six weeks needs cleaning then, whatever the schedule says.

Backwashing Versus a Real Cleaning

Backwashing reverses the flow and pushes the worst of the dirt out to waste. It is quick, it drops the pressure, and it works on sand and DE filters. It is not a cleaning.

Backwashing leaves oil and fine debris packed in the media. That is why pressure comes back up faster each time. A proper cleaning means opening the filter and washing the media itself.

Cartridge filters cannot be backwashed at all. The cartridges come out and get washed, pleat by pleat.

One more thing about backwashing. It flushes water out of the pool. Do it too often through summer and you are refilling with hard water, which raises calcium every time.

Why Cave Creek Homeowners Choose Us for Filter Cleaning

We work on these pools every week. So we know what our dust does to a filter, and how fast it comes back.

You get the filter taken apart rather than hosed off. You also get an honest answer about what is worn inside it. The new clean pressure goes in writing, so you know when it is due again.

Some filters are finished rather than dirty. Cracked tanks, split laterals, collapsed cartridges and broken grids all show the same symptoms as a dirty filter. Cleaning one of those changes nothing. That work is pool filter repair, or a new pool filter installation when the tank itself is done.

If the water stays cloudy with a clean filter and good chemistry, the problem is usually circulation. Start with pool repairs. If it has already gone green, start with green to clean.

For route customers, filter cleaning is scheduled alongside weekly service. We also do it as a one off for pools we do not otherwise service, including rentals and second homes.

Pool Filter Cleaning Questions From Cave Creek Homeowners

The questions we get asked most about filters, answered straight. If yours is not here, call (480) 800-0993.

Most pools in Cave Creek need a professional filter cleaning every three to six months. Dust season shortens that. The gauge decides it: once pressure sits 8 to 10 psi above the clean reading, the filter needs cleaning.

No. Backwashing pushes loose dirt out of a sand or DE filter. It leaves oils and fine debris packed in the media. A proper cleaning means opening the filter and washing the media itself. Cartridge filters cannot be backwashed at all.

Rising pressure is the clearest sign. Once the gauge reads 8 to 10 psi above its clean starting point, the filter is loaded. Weak return flow, cloudy water and a straining pump usually follow soon after.

Filter cleaning is priced by filter type and condition, since a DE filter takes longer than a cartridge and needs fresh DE afterwards. Call Bahama Blue Pool & Spa at (480) 800-0993 and we will quote your filter.

Yes, plenty of owners do. It takes an hour or two, a hose, and somewhere to rinse the media. The catch is what you miss. Torn grids, collapsed pleats and worn O-rings show up only if you know what to look for.

A filter cleaning usually takes under an hour for a cartridge filter. DE filters take longer, since the grids come out and the filter needs recharging. Heavily loaded filters take longer again, because the media needs soaking.

DE filters take roughly 2 ounces of DE per square foot of filter area. A 36 square foot filter needs about 4.5 pounds. Too little leaves the grids exposed, which clogs the cloth and tears it over time.

Pool cartridges are replaceable media rather than permanent parts. Cleaning extends their life, though heat, oils and hard water wear them out. Collapsed pleats, torn fabric, or pressure returning within weeks of a cleaning all mean it is time.

If your pool stays cloudy after a filter cleaning, the filter probably was not the problem. Check chemistry first, then circulation. Torn grids, a cracked tank or a bypassing valve send dirt straight back into the pool.

Yes. We clean filters as standalone jobs, not only for weekly route customers. Rentals, second homes and pools between service companies all get the same full strip down and inspection.
